John Bowne Computer Science Institute Brian Ciampo, Assistant Principal 718-263-1919 ext. 3421 BCiampo@schools.nyc.gov Shane Sint, Institute Coordinator SSint@schools.nyc.gov Program Description The John Bowne Computer Science Institute provides students with the opportunity to foster their creativity, computational thinking, collaborative learning, and digital fluency in an immersive computer science program which will prepare students for relevant post-secondary studies in a variety of fields. The need for computer science and computer programming jobs are growing at twice the national average, and offer high paying salaries. Upon culmination of this program, students will earn certifications which will help prepare them to enter the technology workforce or post-secondary studies. During their first year, students take two engaging classes, Exploring Computer Science and Digital Art, where they touch base on different aspects of computer science which include human-computer interaction, problem solving, web design (HTML, CSS), programming (Scratch, Edware), computing & data analysis, digital art and robotics. In their second year, students will take Introduction to Computational Media, where they will use and understand how code can be a medium for creative expression, and learn the fundamentals of computer science while designing and prototyping interactive projects that run on a browser using java script. In their third year, students will take AP Computer Science Principles, where they will work on their collaborative work experience, programming and research skills while programming in the visual programming language Snap. In their fourth year, students will be able to choose between AP Computer Science A and CS and the City. The AP Computer Science A curriculum covers problem solving, design strategies and methodologies, organization of data, approaches to processing data, analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing. Meanwhile, CS in the City allows students to understand how computer science concepts and practices impact their lives, and the lives of their family and friends. In this class, students will use NYC public data to analyze large data sets that can affect the communities the students come from. Required courses include: Exploring Computer Science, Digital Art, Introduction to Computational Media, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science A or CS and the City. High School Application Program Code: Q14E Computer science drives job growth and innovation throughout our economy and society. Computing occupations are the number 1 source of all new wages in the U.S. and make up over half of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, making Computer Science one of the most in-demand college degrees. And computing is used all around us and in virtually every field. It’s foundational knowledge that all students need. But computer science is marginalized throughout education. Only 45% of U.S. high schools teach any computer science courses and only 11% of bachelor's degrees are in Computer Science. We need to improve access for all students, including groups who have traditionally been underrepresented. Computer Science in New York
